Utsushi is an artistically and thematically diverse production composed of excerpts from the major shows of Sankai Juku, a leading and globally renowned dance company. The showcase of Ushio Amagatsu’s choreographies created over more than thirty years includes key moments of the Japanese “flagship”. The Utsushi show mirrors life and nature in dance.

The Japanese dance company Sankai Juku was founded in 1975 by choreographer Ushio Amagatsu from the second generation of Butoh dancers. Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno belong to the first, “post-Hiroshima” generation. The beginnings of the expressive Butoh dance date back to the 1960s, when it emerged as a response to the development of contemporary dance in Japan. The dancers sensitively embrace the environment and the world as a whole to shake the depth of life through dance.
The world premiere was held at the CNCDC Châteauvallon, France, in July 2008.

Practical information
Where to buy tickets
The National Theatre sells tickets up to 6 months in advance. We are currently selling tickets for performances of Drama, Ballet, Opera and Laterna magika taking place in May-October 2024.
When purchasing online, you can get an e-ticket. You can pick up printed tickets in person at the box offices of the National Theatre.
What to wear?
By their appearance, attire and behaviour, the audience is obliged to adhere to the accustomed practice expected from them when attending a theatre performance.
